Inn2POWER

The general purpose of this project is to strengthen the innovation capacity and capabilities of participating regional, national, and transnational small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the offshore wind sector in the countries surrounding the North Sea. In addition, the Danish effort has an important goal of helping with the internationalisation of Danish SMEs and contributing to their establishment and/or collaboration opportunities in the major offshore wind markets in Europe, particularly the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium. This effort will contribute to Danish companies receiving more orders internationally, thereby increasing turnover and exports.

Challenge

In many markets, local companies need externally available capabilities in order to be considered for orders. This provides a solid foundation for Danish companies, provided that they are paired with relevant and interested local companies in a managed process that promotes trust, shared insights, and learning. Likewise, a local presence established through collaborative relationships may be necessary for Danish companies to avoid challenges involving (e.g.) local content requirements.

Solution idea

With common facilities and logistics, SMEs in this sector will have access to the infrastructure needed to integrate value chains and improve their technology and concepts. The goal is also to launch transnational technology and process development projects, where companies can develop solutions together to reduce the LCOE in the logistics portion.

Project deliverables

This project supports the identification of logistical shortcomings/needs and collaboration opportunities. It also demonstrates how developed business plans for shared, innovative testing and logistics facilities can lead to innovation throughout the value chain.  The largest package of work in the Inn2POWER project concerns the improvement of clusters, cross-sector, and international collaborations for SMEs in the offshore wind sector. Specifically, we support SMEs in identifying valuable business relationships and developing transnational collaborative relationships. The focus was on analysing, developing, and improving the SMEs’ collaborative methods and structuring, as well as on incorporating new knowledge about these methods in and between the offshore wind organisations in the project — this will be done under Danish leadership (by NIC/EASV).

OEDK used its method for creating local networks and improving businesses’ qualifications to assist Danish businesses in internationalisation and establishing a presence in a selection of major offshore wind markets. In the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium, OEDK has taken Danish companies on “networking trips”, where local and Danish companies met in order to form collaborative relationships that create value, as well as a local network that can be targeted to obtain orders for local offshore wind parks. OEDK has had great success with this method in Denmark; cf. Djurs Wind Power (DWP), North Sea Offshore Service Group (NSOSG), and others. Elements of the method include an introduction to the offshore wind supply chain and its requirements, as well as the discovery of competencies and potential collaborative partners.
